Egypt extends cement export ban

Egypt’s Trade Ministry has extended a ban on  clinker and Portland cement exports until October 1, 2010 due to rising local demand, Reuters has reported. ’The increased demand for cement came as a result of continuing activity in the construction sector, which was not markedly affected by the global financial crisis,’ the ministry has said. Egypt’s Suez Cement begins importing clinker

Suez Cement, one of Egypt’s largest listed cement makers, plans to begin importing clinker and bagged cement to meet growing demand in the Egyptian market, the company said. Suez Cement, whose five plants are operating at full capacity, said in a statement it would import 25,000t of clinker from Croatia and Cyprus in July. Caribbean Cement Company Limited has revealed that a 15% drop in sales was one of the factors which led to it to take drastic steps to reduce inventory. Starting Tuesday, the cement manufacturer will begin offering discounted prices for its products. Cemex buys port in Louisiana

Cemex has reportedly purchased a port terminal in Louisiana from Spanish producer Uniland to ship and unload its products, Mexican paper El Semanario reported. While the information did not provide any price details, the operation takes place in the midst of the company’s talks to renegotiate roughly US$14.5bn in debt. Uniland is facing a difficult situation with the decrease of cement consumption in Spain, which provides 62% of its revenues, the report said.

Nigerians may begin to expect fall in the price of cement as part of the 7Mt of bagged cement approved for importation by the Federal government in January this year has started to arrive the nation’s ports.

Kenyan Cement manufacturers have raised the red flag over the influx of cheaply imported cement that is flooding the local market.
