A foreign ministry official said since most of Pakistan’s cement companies were located in the north, the neighbours were considering dropping the traditional Karachi-Mumbai sea route and opening up a land route through Wagah. “Taking the road route makes more sense since most cement companies are located in the northern region of Pakistan. New cement policy for Nigeria

30 January 2008, Published under Cement News

According to an informed editorial report from Nigeria’s This Day, it had always seemed obvious that something was wrong with the previous Nigerian administration’s blanket ban on cement importation into Nigeria. Although the apparent justification for the policy was to encourage local production and protect indigenous investments in the sector, the situation in the market now has made all of that argument unsustainable, if not unjustifiable. While domestic demand for cement is put at 18Mta...

Nigeria: cement glut expected

29 January 2008, Published under Cement News

In the next few weeks shiploads of cement are expected at Nigerian seaports, following the lifting of the ban on cement imports by the federal government. The ban was lifted in order to bridge the yawning supply deficit in the cement market, the likely reason for the rise in the price of the product in the past two years. The price of a 50kg bag of the commodity has risen from N700 in 2002 to N1, 800 last month. The decision to ban cement imports was taken in order to encourage local indust...
