Aditya Birla May cement shipments up 0.8 per cent YoY

India’s Aditya Birla Group said on Monday its cement shipments in May rose 0.8 per cent from a year earlier to 2.66Mt. Cement production grew an annual 2.5 per cent to 2.7Mt in May, it said in a statement. The group includes flagship Grasim Industries Ltd and UltraTech Cement Ltd , with a combined cement-making capacity of more than 31Mt.

Government withdraws tax refunds on cement exports

The Indian government today withdrew tax refunds on cement exports that it had allowed only yesterday.  The Directorate General of Foreign Trade had Monday notified Duty Entitlement Pass Book Scheme (refund of local taxes) on cement exports.     "The amendments stand withdrawn with effect from June 2 itself," a fresh notification said.     The Commerce Ministry had lifted the 46-day old ban on cement exports on May 27. Indian cement maker Ultratech bought a parcel of South African coal ex-stocks at an Indian port for US$170/t CIF and is seeking more, the seller, an Indian trader, said. India’s MoF denies excise duty to cement firms

The finance ministry in India has turned down a proposal from department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) to give 35 per cent abatement on excise duty to cement manufacturers. Had the ministry accepted the proposal and companies passed on the benefit to consumers, the prices of cement could have come down by Rs 10 per 50kg bag. India imports 83,000t of cement from Pakistan

Government is importing cement from Pakistan as a measure to control the hike in cement prices. Cement is being imported from Pakistan by train on a daily basis through Attari station in Amritsar. Over 83,000t of cement has been imported from Pakistan so far. Besides asking the cement manufacturing companies to slash the prices, the government is also making efforts to control the hike in cement prices.

Vietnam has decided to slash import taxes to zero percent from current 5-10 percent on clinker, according to a local finance agency on Wednesday.
