Spain: Cementos Portland reports EUR29.5m loss

FCC-owned Cementos Portland closed the first quarter of 2015 with a EUR29.5m loss, representing a 21.2 per cent higher figure when compared with 1Q14. The cement company attributes the fall to lower CO2 sales and new accounting rules relating to annual maintenance costs. Taking into account these effects, results improve by EUR7m. Tunisia: Bizerte cuts cement price

Ciment de Bizerte is lowering its whole-sale cement price from MAD149.9/t to MAD147.9/t for bagged cement while bulk cement will cost MAD127.4/t to MAD130.4/t. Earlier Carthage Cement had announced a drop in its prices. Ciment de Bizerte forecasts a production of 1Mt in 2015 as the producer noted it was running at full capacity since the start of the year after the renovation of one of its kilns to increase capacity to 1.2Mta.

In the past few days, Carthage Cement has lowered the price of cement by TND6/t for bagged cement and TND10/t for bulk. For instance, a bag of OPC will now cost TND141,640/t while its bulk equivalent will cost 122,500/t. Portugal Semapa profit up 15%

Portugal's conglomerate Semapa, owner of cement maker Secil, posted on Friday a 15 per cent rise in nine-month net profit, helped by lower taxes on some of its overseas operations and a small increase in sales. Net profit rose to EUR80m the company said in a statement. Still, EBITDA fell 4.5 per cent from a year ago to EUR98m. Semapa 1H14 cement turnover up 5.3 per cent YoY

Semapa, the Portuguese holding company that controls cement maker Secil, said turnover from its cement business operating rose 5.3 per cent YoY to EUR217.3m, driven mainly by increased exports from its home market of Portugal. Carthage’s turnover increase fourfold in first six months

Turnover by Tunisia’s newest cement producer, Carthage Cement, amounted to TND101,836m (US$59m), up 419 per cent compared to the same period of last year. Clinker and cement sales totalled TND19.262 and TND64,060, respectively during the six months to the end of June 2014. Readymix concrete activities increased by 25 per cent YoY. Aggregate sales, however, fell 28 per cent due to the absence of infrastructure public works contracts.

Tunisia: Ciments de Bizerte inaugurates plant upgrade

With the inauguration of its upgraded production unit on 17 June 2014 in the presence of the country’s industry, energy and mines, Kamel Bennaceur, Tunisia’s Ciments de Bizerte has increased its capacity by 50 per cent to more than 1.5Mta. The upgrade is the result of a TND250m (US$149m) investment programme which was initiated three years ago. It includes a modernisation of the plant’s dust control systems which will lower emissions to 20mg/Nm3.

Carthage Cement issues Provisional Performance Acceptance certificate, Tunisia

The Provisional Acceptance certificate has been issued by Carthage Cement for the 5800tpd Djebel Ressas cement plant in Tunisia, constructed by an FLSmdith-Ekon-Prokon consortium on an EPC turkney basis. The greenfield Djebel Ressas plant is the first project to be completed after the Arab Spring. According to a statement by Ekon, the plant has exceeded design figures in terms of production capacity and product quality while achieving less emissions.

Tunisian prices to rise following government subsidy cut

The price of cement in Tunisia is to rise following the announcement by Kamel Bennaceur, Minister of Energy and Mines, that the government will remove the subsidy on cement. Prices are set to increase by TND7.5-8 (US$4.6-4.9) local news sources have reported.

Carthage Cement reported a turnover of TND41.95m (US$26.45m) in the three months to March 31, 2014, up 337 per cent compared to the same period in 2013. Clinker sales reached TND16.78m during the first quarter, while sales of cement amounted to TND17.10m, including TND3.95m for export.
