The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) has confiscated some sub-standard cement imported into South Africa from Vietnam and is investigating complaints lodged about the quality of two other imported brands. Indonesian cement producer PT Semen Gresik Tbk plans to acquire a majority stake in Vietnam-based Thang Long Cement JSC, according to Investor Daily. Yen Bai Cement and Minerals JSC said it made a loss of VND15.44bn (US$742,300) in the first nine months of this year, compared to a loss of VND8.63bn in the same period of last year. Revenues rose 3.07 per cent on year to VND246.45bn in Jan-Sept, YBC said in its quarterly financial report. In 3Q, YBC suffered a loss of VND1.85bn on revenues of VND84.66bn, versus VND5.94bn and VND84.36bn in the 3Q11, respectively.

Siam Cement plans to expand Vietnam operations

Vietnam cement producer Vicem But Son Cement JSC said it made a loss of VND65.78bn (US$3.16m) in the first nine months of this year, compared to a net profit of VND6.99bn in the same period last year. Thai Binh Cement JSC reported a net profit of VND81m (US$3.9m) in the third quarter of 2012 compared to VND1bn a year ago due to a rise in input costs and lower demand, the company said. Revenue for the July-September 2012 period was VND23.6bn compared to VND24.2bn in the same quarter of last year. In the first nine months of this year, the company saw 65 per cent net profit drop to VND1.1bn from VND3.1bn over the same period of last year.

Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) sold 14.44Mt of cement and clinker in the first nine months of this year, up 4.5 per cent from a year earlier.
