Holcim and Lafarge yesterday announced they have received clearance from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on their proposed merger. A package of asset divestments has been agreed with the CCI which involves the sale of the Sonadih cement plant and Jojobera grinding unit both owned by Lafarge. Portland and blended cement shipments in the US and Puerto Rico in 2014 reached 88.4Mt, up by about eight per cent YoY, latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirms. Colombia saw a 6.1 per cent YoY rise in cement dispatches in February as 985,300t of the product were delivered, according to DANE, the national statistics office. The largest increases were experienced in Nariño (+52.1 per cent), Bolívar (+37 per cent), Antioquia (+17 per cent) and Bogotá (7.7 per cent). China Shanshui Cement Group Ltd, the largest cement enterprise in the Shandong and Liaoning Provinces of China, recorded sales revenue of CNY15,596m (US$2516m) for the 12 months ended 31 December 2014. PPC and AfriSam call off merger talks

South African cement producers PPC and AfriSam have called off merger talks after they could not reach a consensus on the terms, both the companies said on Friday. Last December PPC confirmed it had received a conditional, non-binding merger proposal from AfriSam. Dangote Cement's pretax profit fell 3.2 per cent to NGN184.68bn (US$928m) last year due to a gas shortage and the impact of wet weather on construction activity, the company said on Thursday.
