PPC cautions on half-year earnings

South Africa's largest cement producer, PPC, reported a two per cent rise in cement sales for the full year to the end of September 2014, as growth in some of its sub-Saharan markets was offset by challenging operating conditions at home. PPC Zimbabwe announced a US$86m investment package in Zimbabwe over the next three years as it expects rising cement demand due to infrastructure projects despite a generally stagnating building sector. Lafarge has agreed the sale of Lafarge Cementos in Ecuador to Union Andina de Cemento of Peru for US$553m. The completion date for the sale of this 1.4Mta works has yet to be agreed. This deal follows the sale of the Honduran cement operations to Cementos Argos at around the turn of the year. Lafarge Zimbabwe is looking for a suitable site on which to build a cement works costing US$250m-300m. Lafarge Zimbabwe is currently looking for a suitable location for a new US$250m cement plant in the country. PPC said it would spend US$80m on a cement mill in Harare, Zimbabwe, to be commissioned in 2016. The new mill, to be funded by a corporate loan, is expected to boost operating efficiencies.
