Moroccan demand increases 4% in February

Morocco’s cement market expanded by 4.3 per cent in February to 1,115,641t from 1,069,926t in February 2018, according to the country’s Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation. The latest data indicates a modest deceleration of market growth when compared with January, when demand increased by 5.3 per cent YoY. In the first two months of 2019, domestic consumption advanced by 4.8 per cent to 2,289,727t from January-February 2018, when demand reached 2,184,783t.

US cement demand up 3% in 2018

Apparent domestic consumption advanced 2.9 per cent from 97.4Mt in 2017 to 100.2Mt in 2018, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). National cement consumption in Peru slipped by 4.9 per cent in February 2019 to 0.893Mt, down from 0.9Mt reported in February 2018, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Total cement dispatches by Asocem-related producers were up 5.3 per cent YoY, but decreased by 2.8 per cent MoM to 0.796Mt in February 2019. Cement demand in Argentina remained largely stable YoY at 921,112t in February 2019, but fell 5.4 per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Domestic demand was entirely met by output from Argentinian cement factories and, unlike in 2018, there were no imports into the Latin American country. Sinai Cement records improvement in 2018

Egypt’s Sinai Cement has reported that its standalone loss has narrowed by 13.7 per cent YoY in 2018 to EGP305.89m (US$17.56m), compared to EGP354.73m in the previous year. The improvement has been attributed to investment revenue and lower expenses, as well as collecting credit interests. However, revenue declined 37.7 per cent to EGP803.68m from EGP1.29bn. The company noted that cement consumption in Egypt fell five per cent in 2018.

French cement market expands despite housing start drop

Cement demand in France rose by an estimated 2.5 per cent to 18.6Mt in 2018, according to SFIC, the country’s cement association. In 2017 the market expanded by 4.5 per cent. Cement consumption in Spain expanded by eight per cent in 2018, resulting in a domestic demand of 13.4Mt, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. Chilean cement demand edges up in December 2018

Cement consumption in Chile increased 2.8 per cent from 359,116t in December 2017 to 369,291t in December 2018, according to the Chilean Chamber of Cement and Concrete (CCHC). In terms of full-year 2018, domestic demand remained largely stable at 3.993Mt in 2018 when compared with 3.995Mt reported in 2017. Consumption levels in December, as in May, June, August and October, increased YoY, helped to offset a poorer performance in the other months.
