Ohorongo training ahead of commissioning, Namibia

Twenty Namibians are in Germany for training in cement production ahead of the commissioning of the Ohorongo Cement plant at Otavi later this year.

The training, which would last up to five months, is taking place in Bernburg where Ohorongo Cement’s mother company, Schwenk, has the largest cement plant.

Cemex Philippines pins growth on govt spending

Increasing government spending may lift its performance before the year ends, according to Cemex Philippines.

 “We’re hoping the increased spending of the government on infrastructure projects this election period will continue throughout the year," said Paul Arcenas, Cemex vice president for planning.

Pretoria Portland Cement’s Zimbabwean division trebled sales to 35,000t per month from 10,000t. This resulted in the local division contributing significantly to group revenue compared to South Africa and Botswana operations, for the interim period ending March 2010. Sale of Cementos Chimborazo shares draws closer, Ecuador

Hugo Jimenez, president of the Commonwealth of Chancahuan, is eager to obtain shares in Cementos Chimborazo, after waiting three years for the deal to take place. 
This is after several attempts to sell the cement plant and six months after the announcement of new negotiations with the Ministry of Industry and Productivity (Mipro). In June 46% of the shares will be transfered to workers and surrounding communities.

Jidong, South African cement plant joint venture

A Chinese-South African joint venture will build a 2500tpd cement plant in South Africa at an investment of US$221m.   China’s Jidong Development and the China-Africa Development Fund will hold 51 per cent of the venture.   South African investment group Women Investment Portfolio Holdings, or Wiphold, and limestone miner Continental Cement will hold the remainder.   The plant will be constructed and operated by Jidong, the companies said in a statement.

East African cement firms worried over cheap imports

The East African Business Council has asked EAC governments to support local cement manufacturers if the industry is to compete favourably with imported products. The local industry is currently grappling with increased competition from imported cement from countries that enjoy lower production costs as well as subsidies since EAC finance ministers reduced Common External Tariff (CET) on cement from 40 per cent to 25 per cent.

Cementos Lima plans capex, Peru

Cementos Lima plans to invest some US$307m from now until 2013; with most if its investments to be executed this year (US$162m) and in 2011 (US $111m), reports business daily Gestion. 

 Projects to be prioritised are the expansion of the Atoncongo cement plant, which will require total investment of US $180m; the Drake Cement project, worth USUS$72m, and hydroelectric project El Platanal, with an investment of US$24m. 

  

Nigeria: Benue Cement plans coal, grinding mills

The Managing Director of Benue Cement, Shree Junnarkar, said the company’s management has concluded arrangements to construct a NGN50bn cement grinding and coal mills that would increase daily cement production as well as ensuring stable power supply to Benue Cement Company (BCC). Suez Cement posts 8.4% first quarter fall

Goradze to expand capacity, Poland

Polish company Gorazdze Cement SA, part of the HeidelbergCement group, is expanding its capacity by a 30%. To this end, it is modernising its two kiln lines at a cost of around EUR129m, resulting in clinker output being raised 70 per cent and a reduction in energy being achieved.   Poland’s cement demand could increase to more than 20Mt from 2012.  Cement production in Jan-Feb 2010 was down 42% on a year earlier at 693,000t because of the severe winter.
