Southern Africa sales fall continues

The decline in Southern African market momentum continued last month with regional industry monthly and daily sales for June 2009 being down 16.7% and 20.6% year on year respectively. All provinces showed a decline with the Western and Eastern Cape experiencing the largest year on year decline in June. The construction sector continues to show positive year on year demand. Brazil 1H09 cement sales steady

Brazilian cement sales held steady in the first six months of 2009, local business daily Valor reported Tuesday. A survey by the National Cement Industry Association (SNIC) showed domestic cement sales totaled 23.9Mt from January through June, only slightly lower than the 24.3Mt in same period last year. The IFC said it will make an equity investment of up to US$24m in cement maker ASEC Algeria to support the construction of a cement plant that will create more than 1,000 jobs and help meet Algeria’s growing demand for high-quality building material. US firm to construct cement plant in Uzbek region

US firm Platineum Partners will build a cement plant in the Uzbek autonomous zone of Karakalpakstan with the capacity of 1Mt in 2009-2011, UzDaily.com reported. The US firm has already started construction works and now it is holding negotiations with the Chinese companies for equipment supply. The project, costing US$128m, will be financed with US$58m of the company’s own resources and with US$70m in loans.

Castle Cement to shed 57 staff

According to local press reports, Hanson Cement could be shedding 57 jobs from its Padeswood facility in North Wales. Budget fails to bring cheers to India cement makers

The Indian cement industry is not happy with the Budget as it fails to meet its long-pending demand for rationalising tax structures at par with other commodity makers, particularly steel. Business Standard reported that Dalmia Cement Limited is setting up a second manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu with an investment of around INR800crore.
