Brazil’s January sales fall

Brazil’s domestic cement sales fell 1.7% in January compared with the same month last year to 3.94Mt, according to figures out Monday from the National Cement Industry Association (Snic). Per working day there was a 0.4% increase compared with January 2008 and a reduction of 3.4% compared with December 2008. Over the 12 months through January, there was a 12.6% increase in sales to 51.023Mt.

Gujarat Sidhee Cement turns to profit in 1Q

Gujarat Sidhee Cement swung to profit for the quarter ended December 2008. During the quarter, the company reported profit of INR116.03m compared with a loss of INR33.34m in the same quarter previous year. Net sales for the quarter jumped 41.01% to Rs 1,145.60m, while total income for the quarter rose 39.43% to Rs 1,145.60m, when compared with the prior year period.

HeidelbergCement Ukraine likely to reduce output

HeidelbergCement Ukraine, located in the Dnipropetrovsk region, may reduce cement output by 10% or 400,000t to 3.6Mt in 2009 compared with 2008, a source in the company told Ukrainian News. However, these plans may undergo changes provided the situation is worsened, he said. "We produced about 4Mt of cement in 2008. We plan a 10% fall in this year’s production, but this figure will be adjusted to the economic situation in this country," he said.

New plant faces long delay, US

According to local news reports, it may be some time before Carolinas Cement – a subsidiary of Titan America – can break ground in Castle Hayne. They must first receive an environmental impact statement. On Thursday, the Army Corp of Engineers took the initial step in the process. Wildlife agencies and federal government officials discussed the plan and purpose for the plant. Army Corp officials say it will take at least 1.5 years before the statement is issued.

Four foreign firms interested in Lanka Cement

Four foreign firms have expressed interest for a strategic alliance with Kankesanthurai (KKS) Cement Factory Ltd, a subsidiary of Lanka Cement PLC (LC), according to a senior LC official. Buzzi Unicem’s turnover in 2008 edged ahead by 0.7% to EUR3,520m, which represents an underlying increase of 1.9%. HeidelbergCement integration of Hanson virtually complete

Italcementi’s underlying turnover in 2009 was up by 1.7% to €5,774.6m, though in absolute terms there was a 3.8% decline because of the non-consolidation of Calcestruzzi. Lafarge mothballs Westbury facility

Lafarge Cement UK announced that it is ‘mothballing’ all cement production facilities at its Westbury Works in Wiltshire. This decision follows the announcement made in September to mothball half of the site’s manufacturing operations.
