Holcim will remain in Philippines, despite temporary shutdowns

Lafarge Ciment Romania will delay the completion of a EUR90m (US$116.5m) investment plan by a year due to falling cement consumption prompted by the global crisis, Bucharest-based daily Ziarul Financiar reported on Monday. Cyprus cement production up 2.2% in 2008

Cement production in Cyprus rose by a modest 2.2% in 2008 according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service. Total cement production reached 1,913,620, compared with 1,872,531t in 2007. Total sales of cement, meanwhile, rose by 8.4% to 1,940,286, compared with 1,790,456 in 2007. There were no exports of cement in 2008, whereas in 2007 exports reached 62,969t. Bulk sales of Ordinary Portland cement fell by 7.6% to 580,908t while Portland Composite rose by 28.8% to 903,302t.

Indonesia production down 39% in December

Indonesia’s cement production in December fell 39 per cent to 1.91Mt from 3.13Mt in the previous month, an official of the Industry Ministry said. Downstream Chemical Industry Director Tony Tanduk said weak sales and large unsold stock from the previous month forced producers to slow down in December. Egypt’s Beni Suef Cement, owned by Greek cement maker Titan, said Egyptian regulators have granted it permission to launch a new production line with a capacity of 1.5Mta. Belarus’ cement output increased by 10.4 per cent to 4,219,000t in 2008 compared with 2007, according to the National Statistics Committee. Production reportedly amounted to 282,600t in December, or 19.3 per cent less than in November and 1.5 per cent less than in December 2007.
