Groupe Bruxelles Lambert increases Lafarge stake

According to Hemscott, Belgian daily L’Echo reported that  Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL), an investment holding company, has acquired an additional 0.35 million shares, representing a 0.2% stake, in  Lafarge S.A., a manufacturer of cement and other construction materials, for EUR39 million. GBL has increased its stake from 17.4% to 17.6%.

The shares of cement companies have been moving up again, on the back of a decent rise in January dispatches for some companies. Industry data show that cement production and despatches increased by 12.6% and 12.7% YoY in December, after growing by 9.8% and 12% YoY in November. Shree Cement Jan shipments up 30 per cent

Shree Cement of India said on Tuesday its January shipments rose 30.43 per cent to 750,000t, from 575,000t a year earlier. Total shipments between April 2008 to January 2009 rose 25.35 per cent to 6.18Mt from 4.93Mt a year ago, it said in a statement. The firm has a capacity to produce 8Mt of cement annually at its plant in the northern state of Rajasthan.

Pakistan cement sales for Jul-Jan up three per cent

Total cement sales in Pakistan increased by around two per cent in January and stood at 2.31Mt compared to the same month of previous year, First Capital Equities analysis stated on Tuesday. Holcim workers have been told the Clarksville cement plant will shut down by April 15. “We continue to work with our employees to make sure they have what they need through this transition,” said spokeswoman Nancy Tully. Cemex hikes Mexican cement prices

Cemex said on Tuesday it had increased its domestic bagged cement prices by MXP138/t (US$9.5), citing higher raw material costs. Cemex said the price increases took effect on Feb. 1 in Mexico, one of its biggest markets. "The cost of the main raw materials to produce cement have grown at a faster rate than the market price," Cemex said in an email to Reuters. Dyckerhoff delays Russian and Ukrainian investments

The preliminary results from Buzzi Unicem’s subsidiary Dyckerhoff show a 1.4% reduction in group cement shipments to 17.32Mt, entirely because of the 10.8% drop in the United States.  Turnover, however rose by 10.7% to €1,969m, and ready-mixed concrete deliveries increased by 9.0% to 8.22Mm³.  Capital expenditure jumped by 91.2% to €346m, and around €330m is likely to be spent in 2009. Cement demand continued to remain strong in January with the three major cement producers – ACC, Ambuja Cement and Aditya Birla Group – posting a quantum jump in their dispatches. ACC managed to cut down its inventory marginally by selling 1.89Mt while its production was at 1.87Mt in January. Both production and output rose 12 per cent when compared to January 2008. Work will start on the construction of "Fezzan Gara Mahrou gha" cement plant in Sebha, in the southern part of Libya in the next few days, promoters of the project told PANA Sunday.
