Clarksville plant site may never be used again

Hopes are dimming that another use can be found for a Pike County plant set to close next year. Holcim Inc. announced Nov. 11 that its cement plant on Highway 79 two miles north of Clarksville will shut down, leaving 181 people without work. There had been hopes that 20 jobs could be kept in the facility’s barge-loading and quarry operations. Brazil Jan-Nov cement sales grow 14.6%

Brazil’s domestic cement sales rose 14.6% January-November compared with the same period last year to 47.138Mt, according to figures Friday from the National Cement Industry Association (Snic). Construction is a major employer in Brazil and is expected to make an important contribution to GDP growth in 2009. In November, cement sales grew 4.7% compared with the same month last year and 0.7% compared with October 2008. Over the 12 months through November sales grew 14.3% to 50.7Mt.

The Dominican Republic branch of Mexican cement manufacturer Cemex announced that local demand will fall 16% in 2009 as a consequence of the global economic crisis, paper Listín reported. Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service said Thursday that it had fined cement producer Sibirsky Cement RUB50.298m for concluding agreements that limited competition on the cement market in the Irkutsk Region. Cemex has decided to suspend its EUR400m investment project in Poland and is planning to conduct cutbacks in its Polish factories. "We have no guarantee that the investment in our factory in Rudniki will be profitable. India rail freight up 7-8% for cement companies

Indian Railways has increased the freight classification for cement, coal and petcoke to 150 from 140. This means an increase of 7-8% in freight costs for cement companies.
