President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez says Venezuela has settled its payment plan for a steel company nationalised in May and is making progress in other negotiations. The GCC cement sector saw a 15 per cent decline in profits in the first three quarters of 2008. The profitability of the GCC cement sector listed companies was US$1.46bn (AED5.35bn) in the third quarter 2008 compared with US$1.72bn in the third quarter last year. The net profit of Egypt’s cement company Misr Beni Suef increased by 5.6% to EGP 223.3m (US$40.3m) for the first nine months of this year, the stock exchange said in a statement on its website without giving further details. The recent drop in energy prices will have a positive impact on Lafarge  in 2009 if the trend continues, the company’s chief executive, Bruno Lafont, told a shareholders’ meeting Saturday. Government allows export of cement by IDEP projects

The government today gave its approval to engineering and construction firm IDEB Projects Ltd for exporting cement to Maldives. The firm has been allowed to export 41,000 cement bags of 50 kg each to Maldives through Tuticorin Port for construction of Indian-Maldives Friendship Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies Centre, according to a Directorate General of Foreign Trade notification.
