Merrill Lynch invests US$50m in China’s Ziping

Merrill Lynch & Co Inc has signed an agreement to buy 46 pct of Ziping Cement Co for US$50m, the 21st Century Business Herald reported, citing sources. Ziping Cement is based in Wenchuan, the epicenter of the May 12 earthquake. Following the investment, Ziping’s annual production capacity is expected to increase to 3Mt from 1Mt previously, the report said.

Qatari Cement Co posts annual profits worth US$69m

Qatari National Company for Cement Industry announced Friday annual profits totaling QAR251.2m (US$69m) compared to last year earnings of QAR169m (US$46.45m). Lafarge’s Bengal unit to be operational from Sept-Oct

The 1Mt greenfield plant by Lafarge at Mejia in West Bengal is likely to begin commercial production by September-October.   "Lafarge has indicated that it will begin commercial production at Mejia, located on land offered by us, from September-October. Vietnam: cement producers seek broader markets

Holcim Romania 1H08 turnover up 20 per cent

The Romanian unit of Holcim said its turnover rose by 20 per cent YoY in the first half of 2008, above the 10 per cent to 15 per cent forecast announced earlier in the year.   The company expects its turnover to grow at the same rate in the second half of 2008, CEO Markus Wirth said.   Holcim Romania closed 2007 with a net profit of 114.5m Romanian lei (US$50.93m), down 34.5 per cent on the year, on a turnover of 990m lei (US$440.32m), up 28 per cent on the year.

Pakistan cement exports after earning a historical level of US$435m foreign exchange during financial year 2007-08, is all set to touch US$1bn-mark by 2010, industry sources told Daily Times Thursday. Cessa investing US$25m to increase production capacity

El Salvadorian cement company Cessa will invest US$25m this year in its Maya 1600 expansion project, aimed at increasing production capacity to over 225,000t, local press reported.   Cessa is being advised by Holcim, which has a controlling stake in the company, in the implementation of the upgradesat its Metapán plant, in Santa Ana.   In addition to the production increase - scheduled to start in 2009 - the expansion project is expected to create 600-800 direct jobs.

Cement makers likely to slash capacity by 8% this year
