UAE’s Ministry of economy reaches price agreement on cement

Cement production up by 3.5% to 1.6Mt in June

Ukrainian cement production rose 3.5% in June 2008 compared with June 2007, to 1.56Mt.   It also increased 3.5% in June, compared to May.  In January-June cement production rose by 12.3%, compared to January-June 2007, to 7,770 tons.   This is in contrast to May 2008 when cement production fell by 4.4%, compared with May 2007, to 1,493,000 tons.   In 2007 production of cement rose by 9.1%, as compared with the same period of 2006, to 14,989,000 tons.  

Chinese cement prices up 3.12% in June

Prices of ordinary Portland cement reached CNY 321/t, inching up 1.9% from the previous month. Those of Portland slag cement reached CNY 369/t, 3.07%; and those of compound Portland cement, CNY 302/t, 4.5%.   Soaring coal prices, which account for 20%-plus of cement’s production cost, are believed to be the major driver for the cement markup. On June 30, prices of Shanxi Datong bituminous coal (5,800 Kcal/kg) reached around CNY 560 a ton, soaring about CNY 140 a ton from May-end.

Algeria, Iran sign EUR220m cement plant deal

Iran and Algeria signed an agreement to build a cement plant at a cost of EUR220m in the north African country, the head of the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) said on Monday. CACI head Brahim Bendjaber added in remarks carried by Algerian official news agency APS that Iran would have a 51 per cent stake with Algeria owning the remaining 49 percent in the plant, which would have a capacity of 1Mta. Brazil’s June cement sales rise 13.9% YoY

Cement sales in Brazil rose 13.9% in June compared with the same month last year, to 4.21Mt, according to figures Monday from the National Cement Industry Association (SNIC).   Sales per business day grew by 11.3% in the same comparison, but fell 1% from May. Konya invests TRY 1.1m in Mersin facility, Turkey

Turkish cement producer Konya Cimento is to invest TRY 1.09m in a ready-mix concrete plant, located in the city of Mersin. In the statement issued to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, Konya Cimento elaborated that initially it expected to invest TRY1.25m in the plant but the actual figure is a lower TRY1.09m. Konya Cimento’s Mersin ready-mix concrete plant became operational last year.

ETA Star to build cement plant at Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

Gulf News reported that Dubai based reported that ETA Star Group, a property developer and construction company, will be investing US$150m (AED 550m) in a new cement plant in Ras Al Khaimah under the Star Cement name. Mr Hamed Salahuddin MD of ETA Star Group said that the new plant, commissioned for last quarter of this year, will add 2Mt of production capacity to their existing 3.5Mt. He added that "We are pushing ourselves in the direction of manufacturing.”
