Semapa 1Q net falls due to lack of one-time gain

Portugal’s Semapa said net profit in the first quarter to March dropped to EUR24.4m from EUR47.2m, due to a lack of the one-time gain booked in the first-quarter of 2007.   In a statement, the industrial holding stock said that 2007’s results were boosted by a one-off gain of EUR25.6m in the first-quarter resulting from the sale of shares in EDP Energias de Portugal, SA.   Semapa said recurring EBITDA decreased three per cent to EUR94.7m.

UltraTech to set up plant in Gujarat

UltraTech Cement, a member of India’s Aditya Birla Group, has announced plans to invest Rs30bn (US$748.8m) in a new cement project at Mahuva, Gujarat. The project will include a cement plant with an annual production capacity of around 3.5Mt and a 60MW power plant. Bulgaria’s Devnya Cement to invest in capacity upgrade

Bulgaria’s Devnya Cement, part of Italcementi Group, will invest over EUR250m (US$389m) to upgrade its plant, Sofia-based Dnevnik daily reported on Wednesday.   The project is due to be completed by early 2010, Dnevnik quoted the cement plant’s communication manager, Neli Statelova, as saying.   The upgraded plant for clinker and cement located in Devnya, in northeastern Bulgaria, will have an annual capacity of 3Mt, Dnevnik added. The current capacity of the plant is some 1.5Mta.

Construction of a cement plant with an annual capacity of 1.3Mt has begun in Iskitim, the Novosibirsk Region (Siberia).
