Vietnam’s cement market contracted 11 per cent YoY and 13 per cent MoM as domestic cement sales reached 5,664,973t in April 2020, according to the latest data from the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Bangladesh opens new ports of call with India to increase trade

Bangladesh and India have added five more ports of call to its existing six and two Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) water routes. Spain saw cement consumption down 50 per cent YoY in April 2020 to less than 0.6Mt, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. The decline in demand has been attributed to the suspension of non-essential works between 30 March and 9 April. Cement deliveries in Switzerland including Liechtenstein remained largely stable in the 1Q20 at 872,104t, just slightly down from 874,275t reported in 1Q19, according to Cemsuisse, the Swiss cement association. Indian cement prices are expected to rise by INR15-20/bag (US$0.19-0.26) due to supply constraints, despite dealers across the country expecting demand to fall by 30 per cent on the back of stalled construction projects, reports analytics agency Crisil. Peru’s cement market sharply contracted to 5700t in April 2020, down from 883,000t in April 2019 and from 488,000t in March 2020, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. The construction of Abay Cement Factory in Amhara, Ethiopia, is now 60 per cent complete and will commence operations next year, according to Samuel Halala, director of the Ethiopian Chemical and Construction Inputs Industry Development Institute.
