Lafarge increases cement shipments by 5%

Lafarge’s first half turnover improved by 4.1% to EUR8,385m, with the EBITDA rising by 14.4% to EUR1,825m and the trading profit by 19.9% to EUR1,360m.  The net interest charge was 23.4% higher at EUR 187m, while capital gains amounted to EUR164m, compared with a EUR2m loss in the comparative period last year.  The net attributable profit advanced by 70.4% to EUR934m.  Net debt at the end of June stood at EUR9445m, representing an 11.0% reduction to give a gearing level of 84.2% compare...

ACC production rises 10.8 per cent

ACC Ltd registered 10.8% increase in cement production in July to 1.63Mt from 1.47Mt a year ago.     The cement major’s despatches stood at 1.64Mt from 1.43Mt in the previous year.     During January-July, the company’s production was 11.84Mt against 11.15Mt in the same period a year ago. Sales rose to 11.84Mt from 11.10t a year ago.

The Venezuelan government has submitted to the Asemblea Nacional a proposal to acquire assets of the Colombian company Cementos Argos, a cement plant controlled by Corporacion de Cemento Andino, at Trujillo, privatized years ago. Lafarge to invest in cement plant in Kaluga Region

Lafarge may invest about €230m in constructing a cement plant in the Kaluga Region not far from Moscow. It also won the auction for the development of the Borshchevskoye deposit located in the Ferzikovo District of the Kaluga Region.     The equipment for the plant will be made in China. Universal to set up US$160m cement plant with British partner

CEO of cement company Universal Cimento, Mete Bulgun says that the company will set up a cement plant in the city of Bilecik with US$160m investment. 65% of the plant’s capital will be provided by a British partner says Bulgun however declines to give the name of the investor. The plant will have an annual cement production capacity of 1.5Mt and is expected to be constructed in 2 years.  

Housing market, cement consumption expected to rebound in 2009

Burdened by the hard correction in the housing market, cement consumption has weakened in 2007, according to the most recent forecast from the Portland Cement Association (PCA). Cement consumption this year is expected to fall 4.4 percent lower than 2006 levels. Kuwait Cement Co. reported a 76 per cent rise in second-quarter net profit on Wednesday.     Net profit was KWD24.8m (US$87.94m) after KWD14.1m in the year-ago period, the firm said in a statement on the bourse website, but did not explain the profit rise.     Earnings per share rose to 53.21 fils from 30.06 fils.
