India’s federal government will soon announce new norms to allow easier imports of cement to check rising local prices of the commodity, a senior government executive said Thursday.     "Cement imports have to be made easier. Indocement acquires 51 per cent stake of aggregate quarry Gunung Tua

Indonesian cement maker PT  Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa said Wednesday it has closed the purchase of a 51 per cent stake in PT Gunung Tua Mandiri for an undisclosed amount.     It said the deal allows it to expand into the aggregate quarrying business.    Gunung Tua is a newly developed aggregate quarry located in Rumpin, West Java, with reserves of 30 million tons of andesit, or crushed stone. Siam Cement to invest in Cambodia cement plant powe generators

Siam Cement PCL, a Thai industrial conglomerate, said Wednesday its board has approved a THB450m investment to install power generators at its cement plant in Cambodia.     Siam Cement said the 90%-owned Kampot Cement Plant in Cambodia will start operations in the fourth quarter of this year. MRTP investigation into cement cartel, India

Allegations of cartelisation continue to swirl around the cement industry. The country’s trade practices regulator, MRTP, on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the business practices of 14 leading cement manufacturers, which have allegedly formed a cartel to jack up prices across the country. Lafarge to invest in Kaluga Cement

Lafarge plans to build a cement plant in the Kaluga Region not far from Moscow. It has won an auction for the right to develop 93ha (230 acres) of the Borshchevskoye deposit.     The company will invest over EUR230m in the first stage of the project. The company’s representatives are also negotiating with the management of the Volvo and  Volkswagen car assemblies being built in Kaluga. The cement plant could use waste from the two assemblies as alternative fuel.  

Belarus President wants cement output tripled to 10Mt by 2011

Azerbaijan cement production exceeds 770,000t

Azerbaijan produced 771,000t of cement during the first half of 2007, with a 2.9% increase from the first half of 2006.  The main cement producer is  Garadagh Cement. This plant meets 50% of the local cement demand (Garadag Cement is capable of producing 1 to 1.4Mta of cement), while the rest is imported.     Notably, Azerbaijan produced 1.554Mt of cement in 2006, with a 0.1% increase from 2005. It has been the highest indicator in Azerbaijan’s cement production history.  

PPC’s Zimbabwe plant breaks down, Zimbabwe

The failure of a raw mill gearbox has halted production at the  Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) plant at Colleen Bawn near Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.    John Gomersall, PPC’s chief executive, confirmed the gearbox failure yesterday but stressed that people were working on it.     Porthold Zimbabwe, which was acquired by PPC, has been helping to meet the high demand for cement in South Africa, with Surebuild cement imported from both Zimbabwe and overseas.
