Siam Cement Group set to increase its investments in R&D

The Siam Cement Group (SCG) plans to invest heavily in research and development (R&D) to make it the country’s largest unit, said Kanokrot Phalakornkul, director of SCG’s Corporate R&D and IP Centre. Investment would focus on R&D personnel with plans to increase the number of researchers to 400, mostly at the doctorate and master degree levels. IDFC to buy 6.6% in Andhra Cements

Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (IDFC) is to acquire a 6.55% stake in Andhra Cements to help part-fund the GP Goenka group company’s Rs 400-crore expansion plans. Separately, IDFC and HDFC have also extended a Rs 275-crore debt to Andhra Cements. The company will spend Rs 100 crore of its own funds. HDFC, however, will not have any equity in the company. The Protection of Competition Committee yesterday gave the green light to the Cyprus Cement Company and the Vassiliko Cement Company to merge, saying the merger was compatible with competition rules. Lafarge to invest EUR38.3m in upgrading Ukraine works

Lafarge is to invest EUR38.3m in upgrading the Mykolayivtsement cement works in Lviv region, a statement released by the company says.     According to the statement, given the price hikes for energy resources coupled with the curent demands of the cement market, the company is planning a number of new projects to maintain its competitive edge.    As a result of the upgrade, the cement works will be able to boost its production by 250,000tpa.

Semen Gresik’s H1 cement sales 7.92Mt, up 5.6 per cent

Indonesia’s largest maker of cement, PT Semen Gresik, sold 7.92Mt of cement in the first half, 5.6 per cent more than a year before, the company said Friday. It said its first-half sales in the domestic market had been 7.12Mt, 3.1 per cent more than a year before, and that its exports had surged 36 per cent to 797,306t. National consumption of cement in the first half amounted to 15.60Mt, against 14.55t a year earlier.

Indian govt to speed up certification of foreign cement firms

Cementos Argos, Colombia’s largest cement company, said Thursday its net profit in the first half of the year increased 79% to COP91.83bn (US$46.5m) from COP51.22bn in the same period last year, according to a filing sent to the securities regulator. The Medellin-based company said operating revenue increased 17% to COP1.924 trillion, Argos said.
