Asia Cement may boost capacity

Asia Cement Corp is considering boosting its capacity to take advantage of strong construction growth in China, the Economic Daily News reported.  Company president KY Lee told the newspaper the firm originally planned to raise its total annual capacity to 24.5Mt by 2010 but it is now looking at boosting that amount to take advantage of the buoyant Chinese construction market.  The firm presently has annual output capacity of 8.38Mt, with 5.38Mt of it in Taiwan.

Cement sales remain in higher in May

Indian cement sales continued to remain strong in May, driven by strong pre-monsoon demand, as high prices in some parts of the country failed to deter buyers.  While Aditya Birla Group’s cement despatches for the month of May grew 7.92 per cent, Gujarat Ambuja’s figures climbed 20 per cent. PM asks for price rise halt

Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai has just asked relevant ministries and government agencies not to increase the prices of principal commodities in the national economy including cement, coal and electricity in the coming time, Nguyen Kinh Quoc, spokesman of the Prime Minister, stated.  The announcement was released at a press conference on May 31 in Hanoi.    At the briefing, Quoc said that PM Khai had required measures to stabilize prices of the goods at a regular government meeting...

Protest at Lafarge India plant

The Indian Congress party Thursday threatened to stop transportation of cement from leading companies in Chhattisgarh to other states if their prices were not rolled back immediately.    The party held a massive protest outside Lafarge India’s Sonadih plant in Raipur district last week against soaring prices of cement, which now cost Rs 170 a bag, up from Rs120 since April.  The party workers tried to lock the main gate of the plant but the police chased away the protesters.   The Congress ...

JCFC signs 12-year agreement for gas supplies

The Jordan Cement Factories Company (JCFC) signed on Wednesday a 12-year gas conveyance contract with the Jordanian-Egyptian Fajr Company. Under the contract, the Jordanian-Egyptian Fajr company will transport natural gas to the Rashadiya Cement Factory through a 24km pipeline, as of the beginning of this year. By 2007, the pipeline will provide around 85 per cent of the factory’s energy needs.

Approval for Argos purchase of Andino

Colombia’s business and industry regulator has approved cement company Argos’ offer to acquire all assets and liabilities of firms Cementos Andino and Concrecem, Argos announced on its website. Cement, steel prices rise sharply

Cement and steel prices in the domestic market have increased sharply due to the arrival of the peak construction season in Mid-May. Major cement producers have raised prices to match soaring demand while steel manufacturers are struggling with increasing raw materials prices.    Ha Tien 1 and 2 and Holcim cement manufacturers all increased cement prices last week. Titan Cement plant accident

Two workers were killed and four others were injured in an accident at the  Titan Cement plant in Elefsina. The accident occurred on the plant’s shipping dock, during maintenance work, when a  section of a land crane came loose and fell on the workers.    Greek government spokesman Thodoris Roussopoulos expressed the government’s regret for the accident that occurred earlier on Wednesday at the Titan Cement plant  and extended its sympathy to the families of the injured. 

Russia’s RATM group to invest $20m in Angarskcement

Russia’s Novosibirsk-based RATM group plans to invest US$20m in the modernisation of the Angarskcement cement plant in the Irkutsk Region, General Director of Angarskcement Nikolai Fomenko told a press conference Wednesday.  RATM Group is a shareholder in Angarskcement.   The investment will be spent on installing new equipment and decreasing the consumption of electric power at the plant, Fomenko said. The sharp rising trend in cement prices in the last few months seems to have been arrested with prices stabilising over the past two weeks and in some cases coming down by Rs 5-15 per 50 kg bag. The development follows phased intervention by the Government during this month to rein in the manufacturers.
