Syria: Lafarge protected interests from ISIS

According to French newspaper Le Monde, Lafarge entered into deals with armed groups in Syria, including the Islamic State, to protect its staff and business interests in the country. Indonesia: Semen Indonesia looks to international markets

Amid prospects of disappointing revenue growth in the domestic market, Semen Indonesia is looking offshore to expand its sales figures. Newly appointed head of PT Semen Indonesia, Rizkan Chandra has said that he wants to raise the company’s sales outside of Indonesia from 5.2 per cent of revenue in 2015 to 10-15 per cent over the next three years. Nepal: planned entry of foreign cement giants

The proposed entry of foreign cement manufacturers into the Nepalese market has set off an expansion drive amongst domestic producers. Dangote Cement of Nigeria, Reliance Cement of India and Hongshi and Huaxin of China have all been given necessary approvals to begin operations in Nepal. The combined FDI for these companies amounts to US$1.45bn and the total proposed output stands at 22,000tpd. Paraguay: INC undergoes maintenance work

Paraguayan cement company Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC) will carry out maintenance work in Villeta for six days, suspending production there from 20 June 2016. The cement producer does not  expet the maintenance work to affect cement supply. The firm is still going head with a number of projects that will save it a substantial sum each year, reports Esmkla.

Peru: Unacem invests in power projects

Unacem will invest in two separate power generation projects in 2016. Through Compania Electrica El Platanal it will invest in Carpapata III in its plant in Condorcocha in Junin. It will also invest US$60m (EUR 53.18m) in a hydroelectric plant in Maranon that is due to begin operations in 2016.

Uganda: drop in cement production

As cement production has decreased and cement prices increased, the construction sector has slowed down. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) there was a low production of cement between March and April 2016 for "major cement producers in the country", which in turn led to a slump in the construction sector. Kazakhstan: constructions begins on Kyzylorda plant

Construction on a 560,000tpa capacity cement plant has begun in the Kyzylorda region of Kazakhstan, reports the regional akimat. The investment project valued 30.2bnt (US$89.2m) is between Meliorator Ltd and Russian company Global Security. Peru cement demand up 1.4% in May

Peru’s cement consumption increased by 1.4 per cent YoY in May, according to the Asociación de Productores de Cemento. Total deliveries, which include exports, increased 1.9 per cent. Production slipped 0.2 per cent when compared with May 2015. “During the fifth month of 2016, cement production fell slightly but national and total dispatches continued to grow,” said the cement association.
