Colombian cement market contracts 5% in May

Colombian cement deliveries in May slipped 5.3 per cent YoY in May, totalling 1.129Mt, according to the country’s statistics office, Dane. Output from Colombian cement factories fell 6.4 per cent to 1.057Mt. In the year to date, domestic dispatches remained stable at 5.056Mt while in the June 2015-May 2016 period increased 4.5 per cent to 12.808Mt.

Indonesia cement demand rises 3% in May

Indonesia’s cement market continues to expand, according to official Indonesian cement industry statistics. In addition, the country is shipping increasing volumes of clinker although cement exports have fallen. In May demand reached 5,133,863t, up three per cent YoY. Spain: cement demand down 7.5% YoY

Spanish cement consumption saw a 7.5 per cent YoY drop in May 2016 to 965,465t, according to the latest figures published by Oficemen, the country’s cement association. In the first five months of the year, the domestic market contracted 2.7 per cent when compared to the same period in 2015. Total demand in Spain is 4.47Mt. Oficemen attributes the fall to national budget deficits and the lack of political stability as well as the absence of measures for public works to recover.

Pakistan: rising coal prices trouble cement sector

The All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) has called on the government to remove import duties on coal following a 16 per cent rise in price, The Nation reports. Votorantim Cimentos opened its 1.2Mta cement plant in Primavera, Pará yesterday. Votorantim expects the plant to reach 50-60 per cent capacity this year. The new works cost BRL860m (US$257.9m) and was planned almost five years ago. Ukraine's State Statistics Service reports that in May 2016, production increased by 6.7 per cent compared to April. For the period January-May 2016 cement production increased by 11.4 per cent against January-May 2015 to 3.24Mt. However, production of cement in May decreased by 0.8 per cent when compared to 875,000t in May 2015. Azerbaijan: Cement production drops by 30% in year to May

Cement production in Azerbaijan has fallen by 30.3 per cent for the five months to May 2016, Azer press reports. The national statistics committee put the decline in output down to lower public and private sector spending. Production of concrete fell by 60 per cent, to 177,000t. Azerbaijan produced 829,000t of cement in the first five months of the year. Clinker imports also fell by 55 per cent, to 140,500t, with prices remaining unchanged at US$46.60/t.

Iran: Turkmenistan exports reach US$1bn

Deputy Minister of Industry, Valiollah Afkhamirad has said that the country's exports to Turkmenistan have reached US$1bn. He added that Tehran is seeking now more than ever to secure its position in the Ashgabat market. Uganda’s cement industry has seen a sudden reverse in prospects as the country’s Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) warned of lower cement production during the months of March and April 2016 and a drop off construction sector activity.
