Philippines: CeMAP claims cement smuggling on rise

The Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) has estimated that 75 per cent of the 161,000t of cement imported into the country in the first quarter of this year was technically smuggled, the Standard reports. Venezuelan cement producers have manufactured around 112,000t of cement in May, according to El Mundo or some 16 per cent of the forecast year total. Industria Venezolana de Cemento (Invecem) reported an output of 52,522 while Venezolana de Cementos (Vencemos) produced 42,200t of its planned 266,000t. USA: union workers reject contract

According to union representatives, union workers at a northern Nevada cement plant have rejected a contract proposal from the Nevada Cement. The previous contract expired 28 February 2016, but was extended to allow time for negotiations. The latest extension will expire on 30 June. Richard Daly, business manager for International Union Local 169, said the two sides are scheduled to meet on 22 June. Dispatches from Argentina’s cement plants rose by 16.5 per cent in May 2016 after a six consecutive months of decreases. SNIC president forecasts cement volumes to fall 16%

Jose Otavio Carneiro de Carvalho, president of Brazil's cement industry association SNIC, estimates the domestic market to decrease 12 per cent in 2016, while showing 61Mt over the June 2015-May 2016 period. Jan-May sales fell 13.9 per cent to 23.2Mt suggesting demand would only resume next year and companies would hold back investments to make sure of that.
