Argentina: May shipments decline 11.8% YoY

In May 2012,  total Argentine Portland cement shipments (including exports) were 889,209t representing a YoY decline of 11.8 per cent, data from Asociacion de Fabricantes de Cemento (AFCP) showed. However, the May figures were up on a monthly basis by 11.4 per cent compared to April 2012. Domestic cement shipments (including imports) reached 871,478t during May 2012.

Argentinian Court of Appeal rejects cartelisation appeal

Argentina’s Court of Appeal has rejected the appeal made by Loma Negra, Juan Minetti, Cementos Avellaneda, Petroquímica Comodoro Rivadavia and Cemento San Martín, upholding the previous price-fixing ruling and the multi-million peso fines attached. The companies were awarded fines of ARS300m (US$66.5m) as penalty for anti-competitive practices between 1981-99. Qatrana Cement Company, a subsidiary of Arabian Cement Co (ARRCO) was forced to halt cement production as employees at the factory held a strike over a pay dispute and closed an access road leading to the works. China output growth rate slows

In the first five months of 2012, China’s cement production increased five per cent to 793.98Mt, the National Development and Research Commission (NDRC) said. However, the growth rate represents a sharp decrease of 14.3 percentage points from the same period last year. UltraTech Cement receives environmental approval for expansion

UltraTech Cement has received environmental clearance for its expansion plans for two of its plants in Madhya Pradesh. The Environment Ministry has given clearance for UltraTech to its clinker plant from 3.59Mt to 6.2Mta and its cement plant from 4Mta to 10.33Mta. The company also plans to expand its captive power plant from 46MW to 122MW. The plants are located in Damodarpura and Khor villages in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh.

Holcim to contest Indian price fixing fine

Holcim has said will defend the position of its two Indian units on the penalties imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for price fixing. Yesterday, the CCI announced that it would fine 11 Indian producers a total of US$1.1bn, stating that they had created an artificial cement shortage “so as to reduce supplies and raise prices in times of higher demand," it said in its judgment.
