Mixed results for Chilean producers

Two of Chile’s top cement producers have reported mixed results for the first quarter of 2012. Cementos Bío Bío (CBB) posted a net loss of CLP408m (US$787,000) in the first quarter, compared with a net profit of CLP204m in 1Q11. The results were due to non-operational charges related to foreign exchange effects, the firm said in a research note. Domestic cement production in Mozambique reached a record 277,000t in 1Q12 with imports falling to 79,000t. UltraTech Cement Ltd dispatched 3.59Mt of cement in May, up 10.6 per cent YoY, according to a company statement. Dispatches higher than the 3.2Mt recorded in April. The country’s largest cement producer by capacity produced 3.5Mt during April, up 7.7 per cent from a year ago.

Caribbean Cement Company Limited has increased the price of bagged cement by 9.2 per cent, according to reports in the Jamaican Gleaner. Vietnam is projected to face a surplus of 6Mt of cement this year, the Vietnam Cement Association (VNCA) said.
