Cement deliveries grew marginally in January this year by 1.4% YoY and are expected to rise 5-7% YoY in February, according to experts. This upturn comes after a 3% YoY decline in December and 6% in November last year. The cement space has been at the receding end of investor selling. One of the reasons is the recent hike in the raw material prices. Cement companies have advised retailers of a price hike of between PHP7-10 (US$0.16-0.23) per 40kg bag. The price rises will take effect as of next week, 8 March following the increased costs of fuel, raw materials and transport. The local cement industry is dominated by the three global cement firms: Lafarge, Cemex and Holcim. Cement prices in the southern part of Pakistan have increased by PKR10 per 50kg bag. An industry official revealed that the latest price hike has taken average cement prices to PKR340 per bag in Karachi and other cities in Sindh. Importers of cement to Jamaica could be hit with a 15-20 per cent quota on imports this year if the Ministry of Commerce decides there is an imminent threat to the local cement industry.
