The cement industry in Pakistan kicked off the FY20-21 on an exciting note. During the first six months of the current fiscal year, total cement dispatches grew by 15.7 per cent, from 24.751Mt in July-December 2019, to 28.628Mt in July-December 2020. Local dispatches have increased by 15.9 per cent in July-December 2020 to 23.61Mt from 20.373Mt in July-December 2019. Philippine Tariff Commission questions DTI's October import duty rise

The Tariff Commission, in the Philippines, has questioned the decision of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to increase the definitive safeguard duty on imported cement by PHP0.80 to PHP9.80/40kg bag (US$0.016-0.23/40kg bag) starting in October 2020. Annaba port exports 300,000t clinker in 2020

The port of Annaba in Algeria has exported 300,000t of clinker to several African countries since the start of 2020. Pakistan's Intermarket Securities Ltd has reported that cement manufacturers are hopeful that exports to South African might resume soon as anti-dumping duties expire on 17 December 2020. Hail Cement to repay outstanding loan amount

Hail Cement said its Board of Directors decided on 15 December 2020, to pay early and in full the balance amount of the loan from the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF). The amount of SAR152m (US$40.53m) is what is left from the original loan amount of SAR300m. A total of SAR148mis has already been repaid, the firm said in a statement.  The financial impact will be reflected in the statements for the year ending 31 December 2020.

DTI reviews cement import duty

The Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has ordered that, for the second year of the three-year implementation period of the safeguard measure against imported cement, a PHP9.80 (US$0.2) duty will be imposed on every 40kg bag of imported cement or PHP245/t. Pakistan's cement industry dispatched 4.508Mt domestically and overseas in November 2020, recording a growth of 4.2 per cent on a YoY basis, according to the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA).   Out of the total dispatches, the local share increased by 6.3 per cent to 3.742Mt from 3.521Mt in November 2019, while exports registered a reduction of five per cent to 766,273t from 806,521t. Bangladesh's cement industry has earned export revenue of US$2.82m in the five-month period of July-November 2020 (5MFY20-21), compared to US$4.08m in the year-ago period, a fall of 30.9 per cent YoY. Cement exports from Turkey to Turkmenistan increased by 79.1 per cent from January through September 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, amounting to US$14.8m, the Turkish Trade Ministry reported.
