Cement consumption in Vietnam remained largely stable in November 2018 when compared with the previous year at 5.675Mt, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Of this total 1.955Mt was sold by the VICEM Group with an additional 1.62Mt through the company’s joint ventures. Other cement producers sold 2.1Mt in November, representing a four per cent YoY drop. MoM total domestic sales fell by four per cent with VICEM Group companies noting a six per cent drop and its joint ventures a three per cent fall. Other cement producers reported a two per cent decrease in domestic dispatches.

Exports in November increased by 15 per cent YoY to 2.774Mt, of which 0.929Mt were cement and 1.846Mt clinker. While clinker export volumes slipped by five per cent, cement exports noted a 94 per cent surge YoY. When compared with October 2018, total exports fell by three per cent but while clinker volumes slipped by five per cent, cement exports increased by two per cent.

Key export destinations for clinker were China and Bangladesh with smaller volumes to the Philippines and Taiwan. The Philippines was the main export market for Vietnamese cement, followed by some distance by China, Malaysia, Taiwan.

In the first 11 months of 2018, cement demand in Vietnam reached 59,098Mt, up 10 per cent YoY.

Total exports surged by 62 per cent to 29.475Mt, complementing domestic sales by Vietnamese cement companies, which produced 88,574Mt of cement in the 11M18 (+23 per cent YoY).
