Thailand's largest conglomerate, Siam Cement Group (SCG) has said it is to build a new 1.8Mta plant in Indonesia as it seeks to gain a foothold in this thriving Southeast Asian cement market. Indonesia reported cement sales growth of 15 per cent in January 2013 on the back of a boom in property development and infrastructure projects. The Bosowa Group has kicked off construction of a clinker grinding plant in Sorong, northern cost of Papua, Indonesia, with a groundbreaking ceremony. State-owned Indonesian cement producer PT  Semen Gresik achieved record production last year and targets further increases this year, according to a senior member of the company. Cement production rose 18 per cent in 2012 to 22.6Mt and revenue is expected to hit IDR19trn (US$2bn). “We hit a record in terms of production,” said the company’s president director Dwi Soetjipto in Gresik early this week.
