Holcim Algeria buys automatic ship loader for Djendjen port operations

Holcim Algeria invested EUR3m in an automatic ship loader for its operations at Djendjen port. The 18,000tpd ship loader will speed up clinker loading at the port, reducing waiting times and demurrage costs, as well as maintain product quality. It is also expected to reduce the operations’ environmental footprint by reducing dust and other emissions.

South Valley Cement narrows loss in 1H23

Egyptian cement producer South Valley Cement has announced sales of EGP464.01m (US$15.02m) in the first half of 2023, up from EGP326.11m in the same period a year earlier. The 1H23 saw the company post a net loss of EGP76.25m, down 35 per cent YoY from the EGP117.01m loss seen in the opening six months of 2022.   South Valley Cement, part of Building Materials Industries Co , currently runs one cement plant, located in Beni Suef.

Egypt-based Misr Cement (Qena) Co has reported net sales of EGP1900m (US$61.49m) for the six months ended 30 June 2023, up from EGP1295m in the same period a year earlier. Tunisia-based Société Les Ciments de Bizerte reported a 20.9 per cent fall in total sales to TND24,494,717 (US$7.011m) in the second quarter of 2023 from TND30,961,761 in the 2Q22. All sales were within Tunisia due to a halt in exports due to a lack of competitiveness following a surge in energy costs. Carthage Cement advances 1H turnover by 24%

Tunisia-based Carthage Cement increased its turnover by 24 per cent YoY to TND208.546m (US$68.92m) in the first half of 2023, according to information on the Tunis Stock Exchange. The improvement of the company’s results is attributed to a jump in 1H cement sales with local sales increasing by 25 per cent YoY to TND158.822m and exports by 19 per cent to TND31.284m.
