Cement demand in Spain shows double-digit growth

Cement demand in Spain expanded by 11 per cent in the 12 months up to January 2018 when compared with the year-ago rolling year, according to the new Cement Barometer, prepared by Oficemen, the country’s cement association. The latest figure has seen domestic consumption rise for 11 consecutive months with YoY double-digit increases noted in the past two months. However, cement and clinker exports have continued their decline, falling 10 per cent in 2017.

According to a new report by Oficemen, the Spanish cement industry is undertaking steps to reduce its CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 when compared with 1990 as base year. Oficemen, the Spanish cement association, has appointed Jesús Ortiz as its new president. Mr Ortiz is currently CEO of HeidelbergCement in Spain. With a degree in Economics and Business Management from a French university, he succeeds Jaime haro.

Spain's total cement consumption for 2016 reached 11,140,639t, down more than 350,000t compared to 2015 and representing a 3.1 per cent YoY fall. Oficemen: plant closure possibility if power price continues to rise

Oficemen warned of a potential closure of cement plants and stoppages if the price of electricity in Spain continues to rise and cement production becomes more expensive, endangering the competitiveness of Spanish cement in the export markets. Cement consumption in Spain fell 7.2 per cent YoY in October to 936,568t, according to the Spanish cement association, Oficemen. For the first 10 months of 2016, cement demand has fallen by 3.4 per cent YoY to 9,328,077t – 324,831t less than in 10M15. Oficemen expects full-year cement consumption to fall by over three per cent.

Spanish cement consumption saw a 7.5 per cent YoY drop in May 2016 to 965,465t, according to the latest figures published by Oficemen, the country’s cement association. In the first five months of the year, the domestic market contracted 2.7 per cent when compared to the same period in 2015. Total demand in Spain is 4.47Mt. Oficemen attributes the fall to national budget deficits and the lack of political stability as well as the absence of measures for public works to recover.
