Weak shilling pushes up Tanzanian cement prices

Tanzania Portland Cement has raised retail prices to TZS14,000/50kg (US$8) bag from TZS13,500 (US$7.7) to cushion increased operational costs as a result of the weak shilling. 

According to TPCC Sales and Marketing director Ekwabi Majiko, the factory price for the cement has risen by about TZS500, which means the product will now be sold on average of TZS14,000/t retail.

The All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) has urged the government to clear its long-awaited dues relating to an inland-freight subsidy. Six Brazilian cement makers colluded to fix prices, hampering competition in the midst of a construction boom, Brazil’s justice ministry said. Hurt by a sharp rise of INR100/bag in cement prices in the past three months, India’s realtor’s body, NAREDCO, has appealed to the country’s competition watchdog, CCI, to investigate the sudden hike in rates.

Cement prices are to be increased by INR5-10 with immediate effect, according to Binani Cement, on account of rising input costs. Prices in Central, North & Eastern regions are to increase by INR10/bag while Gujarat will see an increase of INR5/bag and Mumbai (West) is expected to see a hike of INR10/bag. Prices in the south will remain firm with no increases announced. Meanwhile, demand has picked up sharply in the Central region and Gujarat.

Brazil increased its cement imports from Arab countries this year, according to ANBA. From January to September the Latin American country purchased 247,000t of cement, 12 times more than in the equivalent period of 2010. The Ministry of Finance yesterday announced it would levy stiff anti-dumping duties on cement and cement clinker imports from China, citing damage to the local cement sector. Cement supply and prices at the retail market in the city have stabilised after a major producer resumed full production.
