US March cement shipments rise 6% YoY

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in March 2014 rose by nearly six per cent YoY to 6.1Mt, latest data from the USGS show. India Cements is planning to merge with its subsidiary Trinetra Cement to consolidate its operations. N Srinivasan, vice chairman and managing director of India Cements, said the merger will bring the operations under one company. Currency movements depress Cimpor profits

Cimpor has reported an adjusted first-quarter turnover 6.8 per cent lower at EUR592.5m and the EBITDA declined by 9.7 per cent to EUR133.1m. Measured in local currency, however, there was a profit growth rate of 15.3 per cent, but the euro strengthened considerably against most other currencies in which Cimpor trades. Australia-based producer, Adelaide Brighton, said it expects profit to be flat for this year and cement and clinker demand also to be similar to 2013. Russian cement major Eurocement Group has signed a package of contracts with Chinese companies for equipment supply, engineering, installation supervision and employee training services, totalling over US$500m. Vietnam exports rise 41% YoY

Vietnam exported 8.38Mt of cement and clinker worth US$355m in the first four months of this year, up 41 and 43 per cent in terms of volume and value, respectively, the General Department of Vietnam Customs said. Lafarge has officially opened its 2Mta Kaluga cement plant in Russia with a ceremony attended by First Deputy Prime Minister, Igor Shuvalov. Iran produced 4.501Mt of cement in the first calendar month of the current Iranian calendar year (21 March 2014 - 20 April 2015), according to its Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade reported that the country. Over 70 per cent of the total (some 3.234Mt) was supplied to the domestic market during the month, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported. Brazilian monthly cement sales rise 4.9% YoY

Brazilian cement sales in April 2014 climbed by 4.9 per cent YoY to 5.9Mt, preliminary data and market estimates gathered by Sindicato Nacional da Industria do Cimento (SNIC) reveal. During January - April 2014, sales totalled 22.8Mt, a 3.3 per cent rise compared to the first four months of last year. Accumulated cement sales for the 12 months between May 2013 - April 2014 reached 70.7Mt, expanding by three per cent compared to the same period of the previous year (May 2012 - April 2013).
