Lafarge to merge South Africa and Nigerian units

Lafarge has announced it is to consolidate its African operations by combining its businesses in Nigeria and South Africa. Lafarge will transfer its shares in its Nigerian and South African operations into Lafarge WAPCO Nigeria Plc, which will then be renamed Lafarge Africa Plc. The combined entity will have a cement capacity of about 12Mt, as well as operations in aggregates, ready-mix and fly ash. The Colombian cement market expanded by 4.3 per cent YoY in April 2014 as 0.957Mt were delivered to domestic customers, according to the latest report from national statistics office, Dane. Cemex opened a new distribution centre on Tuesday in Rubi, a city located 25km from Barcelona. Eurocement Group and Sberbank of Russia have signed a cooperation agreement to secure funding for the construction of new plants in Russia. Lafarge announced the sale of its cement operations in Ecuador for an enterprise value of US$553m to Union Andina de Cementos SAA (UNACEM). Pakistan export volumes and revenues have continued to decline in the first 10 months of the current fiscal, mainly due to a decline in shipments to Afghanistan. On a more positive note, despite the disappointing performance on the export front, utilisation rates have climbed to a five-year high.
