China's cement imports surge in May

The imports of cement into China soared in May to 4Mt, twice the level seen at the start of the year as the housing market rebounded and infrastructure spending showed strong growth, according to brokerage Braemar ACM. The increase in incoming trade is helping smaller-sized bulk carriers, said the brokerage firm.

In July 2020 Argentina’s cement market contracted by 13.5 per cent YoY to 865,869t but expanded by 8.5 per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico fell 6.3 per cent YoY to 8.7Mt in May 2020, according to data published by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The top five state markets were Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio. Their total market share was 39 per cent in May. Shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico fell 7.5 per cent YoY to 8.1Mt in April 2020, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Cement consumption in Spain declined 16.5 per cent to 6.1Mt in the first half of 2020 when compared with the 1H19, according to Oficemen, the country’s  cement association. While cement demand in Peru rebounded in June 2020 to 678,000t when compared with 298,000t sold in May 2020, it remained 26.1 per cent below demand reported in June 2019 as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continue to be felt, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. The Antimonopoly Committee of Uzbekistan intends to simplify the imports of cement. Domestic cement shortages , due to a pick-up in construction works and a fall in imports, have seen the cement price increase by 59 per cent, according to Esmerk CIS News. Cement demand in Argentina has fallen 7.3 per cent YoY to 797,926t in June 2020, according to AFCP, the national cement association. However, MoM a 23 per cent advance was reported. JSW Group reportedly set to reduce imports from China

Parth Jindal, managing director of JSW Cement, has announced on social media that JSW Group plans to reduce its net imports from China. "The JSW Group have a net import of US$400m from China annually and we pledge to bring this down to zero in the next 24 months," said Mr Jindal. In the comment, Mr Jindal referred to the clash on the border of both countries, which took place earlier in June. JSW Cement currently imports clinker from China to supply its grinding operations.
