High Court orders stay on Nirma cement plant

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday ordered a stay on all construction activities at the Nirma Ltd’s upcoming cement plant in Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar district while hearing a petition by farmers opposing it. Cement consumption in the Dominican Republic increased from 429,500t to 482,664t in January and February compared with the same two months a year ago, translating into a 12.4% rise. Peru’s Constitutional Court declared that the lawsuit filed by Cementos Lima had grounds and was sustained, and voted for the reestablishment of the 12% tariff for cement. PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk looks set to raise its production by 1.5Mta as of May when its two new cement plants start production. Indocement corporate secretary Dani Handayani said on Monday the construction of the two new cement mills cost an estimated US$35m. South Africa’s biggest cement producer, PPC expects capital expenditure in 2010 to be between ZAR850-950m (US$114.8m) and to slow in 2011 to 800-900 million rand. Lafarge, whose mining activities for extracting limestone were stalled last month by the Supreme Court, has admitted that it mortgaged tribal land in Meghalaya to international banks to secure a loan of $153 million. Cement prices across various markets in India are likely to go up by about INR20-25/bag before end of March. Cement Australia will spend A$30m over three years to knock down two smaller silos and build a larger one, increasing overall storage capacity at the Devonport wharf.
