Recent US cement news paints disappointing picture

According to the US Geological Survey, in 2009 about 70Mt of Portland cement and 2Mt of masonry cement were produced at 107 plants in 37 states, including two plants in Puerto Rico. Cement prices in the UAE have reached a stable average rate between Dh210 and Dh220 per tonne, according to an industry survey. Japan’s Taiheiyo Cement Corp is expanding its business that turns fly ash from household refuse into a raw material for making cement. Saudi Arabia’s cement sector witnessed a slowdown in February and private players’ market share fell month-on-month for the first time since June 2009, according to a report issued by NCB Capital.
