Abia to establish Nigeria cement factory

ABIA State Government says it will establish a cement  factory in Arochukwu in southeastern Nigeria. A bid for the project has already been won by the Hermes Juno Consortium, according to Governor Theodore Orji, who disclosed this in his television and radio address to the people of Abia State. Shiva sees 35% growth in 3Q despatches

Orissa-based Shiva Cement has reported 34.9% growth in its despatches of cement and clinker during the third quarter of the current fiscal year. The despatches of the cement maker for the nine months ended on December 31, 2009 jumped by 48.8% in comparison to corresponding period of 2008. Last month, the company received the sanction letter from Government of Orissa for additional 25.69 acres land for implementing expansion project.

Shree shipments up 22 per cent, India

Indian cement maker Shree Cement said on Monday its December shipments rose 22.4 per cent to 858,000t, up from 701,000t a year earlier. Total shipments during April-December period rose 24.67 per cent to 6.77Mt, up from 5.43Mt a year ago, it said in an emailed statement. The company has a capacity to produce 9.5Mta of cement at its plant in the north western state of Rajasthan.

CRH cautious on timing of sustained pick-up

Irish-based CRH said the timing of any sustained pick-up in developed markets this year was unclear despite recent positive news flow. CRH, which said on Tuesday it would make more cuts this year than previously indicated, gave a more cautious outlook than rivals, saying that while it was well-positioned to respond to evolving demand patterns, trading conditions remain difficult. German construction orders see pick up

German construction orders rebounded in October, with recoveries noted across all major areas of the sector, the Bundesbank reported on Monday. On the month, seasonally adjusted construction demand rose 3.6%, leaving the annual change at +0.3%. Compared to the third quarter average, orders were down 0.65% in October. Structural housing registered the stronger jump, rebounding 6.7% between September and October, while civil construction climbed 2.8%. Structural non-housing recovered by 3.7%...

US monthly construction spending falls

US construction spending fell more than expected in November to its lowest level in over six years, dragged down by a sharp decline in private home building, government data showed on Monday. The Commerce Department said construction spending fell 0.6 per cent, declining for a seventh straight month, to US$900.1bn, the lowest level since July 2003. St Marys Cement, Canada, is doing a sharp about-face on the controversial issue of water testing for its proposed limestone quarry northeast of Carlisle.
