Appeals against Weston plant to be heard soon, NZ

A key economic decision for two communities on opposite sides of the South Island will be made at a hearing beginning in 10 days. In February 2008, Holcim New Zealand was granted 46 consents to operate a new cement plant and quarries at Weston, Oamaru. ACC sees Indian cement market oversupply in 2H

Business Standard quoted ACC said that the domestic cement market will see oversupply in the second half of 2009. The Holcim group company said that: "Although cement prices may be reasonably stable, the bunching of fresh capacity, particularly in the 2H of 2009, could cause a supply overhang." German Dyckerhoff net profit up 7% YoY in 2008

Dyckerhoff AG  reported a net profit of EUR 306.7m (US$ 395.8m) for 2008, a rise of seven per cent YoY. The company attributed the result to the considerably lower expenses for income taxes. It said it will propose a dividend increase to EUR 2 per ordinary and preferred share each versus EUR 1.32 a year earlier. Nepal cement producer halts production

Udaypur Cement, Nepal’s largest cement producer, has halted its production for the last six. The country’s largest cement factory is incurring a staggering loss of Rs 4.5m to Rs 5m per day due to crippling power shortage. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is supplying power from just 4am to 11am despite its promise to provide 10 MW of electricity to the factory round the clock. The factory is totally bereft of electricity on Thursdays and Fridays.

Lafarge plans major expansion of Alberta plant, Canada

Lafarge is planning a substantial increase in capacity for its Exshaw Cement Plant located in Exshaw, Alta, about 80km west of Calgary. According to latest updates from the Cement Manufacturers’ Association (CMA), the Indian cement industry despatched 16.02Mt of cement in February, up 8.39 per cent, compared with 14.78 Mt in the same month last year. Turkish sector expected to contract 10-12%

Head of the Turkish cement manufacturers’ association (TCMA), Adnan Ignebekcili, says local cement makers managed to offset the effects of economic downturn in 2008 with the help of export deals sealed before the global financial crisis broke.
