Bulgaria’s Devnya Cement, part of Italcementi Group, will delay a 500 million lev (US$326.2m) investment in capacity expansion due to falling demand for exports resulting from the global crisis, Sofia-based Dnevnik daily reported. Eleven positions fell victim to the layoff axe Tuesday at the Holcim (US) Inc Portland Plant just east of Florence, according to reports from local newspaper The Daily Record. The cement plant is the largest manufacturing employer in Fremont County, with 190 workers. “With deep regrets, a job reduction has taken place at the plant with the elimination of 11 positions, effective March 27,” plant manager, Jason Morin, said.

Canadian cement use down slightly in 2008

Portland Cement Association Canadian reported that cement consumption declined 2.3 per cent in 2008, according to year-end figures released last month by PCA. Canadian cement use totaled 9.4Mt for the year, down from 2007 figures of 9.6Mt. Reflecting declining construction in the US, cement exports from Canada fell 23.7 per cent, from 5.5Mt in 2007 to 4.2Mt in 2008. Only two regions recorded increases in consumption. Cape Girardeau cement plant to expand shipping capacity, US

An expansion at Buzzi Unicem USA will allow more cement shipments by rail and provide additional storage tracks at a new rail yard near its plant in Cape Girardeau. The rail yard will have five half-mile-long storage tracks that can hold up to 50 cars each. Shipments by rail are expected to increase 25 to 30 percent once the project is complete. Asia Cement, Taiwan, said it expects 2009 capital spending to rise about 25 per cent to CNY2bn, mainly for capacity expansion, according to news reports from Reuters.
