India Cements Q2 net falls 40% on forex losses

India Cements Ltd  reported a 40 per cent drop in its July-September net profit, lagging analyst estimates on higher depreciation, a notional loss on foreign exchange and more taxes, a top official said.  Its profit fell to INR1.34bn from INR2.23bn a year ago despite an increase in sales to INR10.88bn from INR8.90bn a year earlier. Portuguese construction group Semapa closed the first nine months of 2008 with a net profit of EUR87m, an annual decline of 11%, the group informed the national bourse regulator in a filing on Thursday. Lafarge plans to invest EUR100m in French plant

Lafarge unveiled on Wednesday its plan to invest EUR100m to set up a new production line at its plant in the Provence region, southern France. Cemex is trying to bring capacity in line with the falling demand by three capacity closures in Germany.  This follows falling cement demand both in Germany and in the company’s export markets. The UAE Ministry of Economy says there will not be any immediate revision on the price cap of cement, even as representatives of factories said they are producing at a loss.
