Two ministries struggle over Kankesanthurai plant, Sri Lanka

The Industrial Development Ministry (IDM) and Construction and Engineering Services Ministry (CESM) are both trying to get approval for two Indian cement companies, to invest in the Kankesanthurai cement plant. Belarus output up 10.7 per cent in first nine months of 2008

Belarus’ cement output in the first nine months of 2008 totaled 32Mt, a 10.7 per cent YoY increase, according to the National Statistics Committee. Cement output reportedly amounted to 392,900t in September, or 2.6 per cent less than in August and 17.9 per cent more than in September 2007. The Belarusian government had set itself the task of increasing the domestic cement supply by 47 per cent in 2008 to 5.4Mt and 9.5Mt by 2010.

Kuwait Cement Co to double clinker capacity

Kuwait Cement Company plans to double its annual clinker capacity by adding a second clinker production line in the third quarter of 2008, the company said in a filing to the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) on October 16, 2008. The new clinker line will have an annual capacity of 2.5Mt. Kuwait Cement has already awarded a KWD12.45m (US$46.9m) to an unnamed local company for the construction and infrastructure works on the expansion project. The contract is to be completed by end-August 2010.

Prosperity Minerals cuts full-year guidance

Prosperity Minerals Holdings Ltd said Monday full-year earnings will be substantially below market expectations as slowing growth in China cuts demand for cement and iron. Cement consumption in Spain fell in September by 24.7 per cent compared with the same month in 2007, the steepest drop so far this year. Over the first nine months of 2008, the decrease was 19 per cent YoY, with cement use totalling 34.6Mt. In response, cement production in Spain has also plummeted.
