Southern Africa Cement August Sales Decline 7.2%

Cement sales in the Southern African Customs Union fell 7.2 per cent in August from a year earlier, the Cement & Concrete Institute said. Sales in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland fell to 1.3Mt from 1.4Mta earlier, the Johannesburg-based institute said. Lafarge and major oil company Total will sign deals to boost their activities in Syria in the wake of President Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit, officials and company executives said. India’s ACC Ltd said on Thursday its cement shipments in August fell to 1.54Mt from 1.57Mt a year earlier.   The firm, in which Holcim holds about 41 per cent, said production in August fell to 1.52Mt from 1.6Mt a year ago.

Star Cement is setting up a new production unit in Ras Al Khaimah at a cost of US$150m. The new plant will start operations by the end of the year.
