Venezuelan govt officially takes over cement industry

The Venezuelan government adopted a decree on Thursday nationalizing the cement industry, giving the state ownership of firms controlled by Holcim, Lafarge and Cemex. Saudi Arabia’s total cement output is expected to rise to 43.6Mt in 2008 and 49Mt in 2009, according to a report of local BMG Financial Advisors). The figure stood at 31Mt in 2007. The forecast is based on the current construction boom in Saudi Arabia which is pushing demand up. Indonesia’s cement consumption surged 23 per cent to 3.57Mt in May from a year ago amid brisk construction activity during the period, an industry official said. The Karnataka Government has given its ’go ahead’ signal for Chettinad Cement Corporation Ltd to put up a 2.5Mt cement plant at Kallur village in Gulbarga district.
