Ukraine cement production up 9.1% in April

Chidambaram warns cement industry again, India

Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has warned the cement industry again of serious “administrative measures” if it did not cooperate in checking inflation.   He told local press that it was universally acknowledged that steel and cement manufacturers hike prices seeking advantage of the demand-supply situation. Taiheiyo forecasts JPY2.5b 1H net loss next year

Taiheiyo Cement Corp forecast a half-year net loss of JPY2.5bn for next year, after decreasing net profit 16.1% to JPY20.5bn for the year to March 31, 2008.   Revenue was down 1.4% to JPY927.6bn.   Operating profit decreased 32.8% to JPY51.6bn and ordinary profit fell 38.7% to JPY41.6bn.   Earnings per share dropped from JPY25.2 to JPY20.2 per share.   A half-year revenue of JPY440bn is forecast, with a full-year net profit of JPY10bn projected on revenue of JPY935bn to March 31, 2009.  

Lafarge acquires 35 per cent stake in Algerian cement maker ERCC

Lafarge has acquired a 35 per cent stake in Algerian cement company ERCC, according to Agence-France Presse.   The acquisition is part of Lafarge’s overall investment in Algeria of between US$400m and $500m, the sources said.   The Algerian state owns the remaining 65 per cent of the company.

Titan Cement eyeing expansion in Balkans, Russia

Greece’s Titan Cement Co. SA is looking to expand in the Balkans and Russia, Greek financial daily Imerisia reports Tuesday.   Citing the company’s communications director, the newspaper says Titan Cement is keeping its "ears and eyes open."   The newspaper also reports the company is interested in entering the Romanian market.

Vietnam: tax exemption sought for clinker imports

The Vietnam Ministry of Construction has proposed the Ministry of Finance to consider cutting tax on clinker imports from ASEAN and non-ASEAN countries to 0%, state media reported Tuesday.   Clinker sources from ASEAN nations are now scarce so domestic steelmakers have to buy from non-ASEAN countries with import tax of 10%, while clinker prices on the global market are high, at $70-$75/ton.   The Ministry of Construction said the adjustment of clinker import tax is to support local steel ent...

Asia Cement: no major impact to Sichuan operations

Chinese cement maker Asia Cement (China) Holdings Corp said late Tuesday its plants in Sichuan were not seriously affected by Monday’s earthquake, and it expects operations to resume in the next few days. Indonesia April domestic cement sales up 28 per cent

Indonesia’s domestic cement sales growth jumped 28.2 per cent in April from a year ago to 3.08Mt.   The data showed sales at the country’s largest cement maker, PT Semen Gresik Tbk , rose 20.6 percent to 1.39Mt.   The April sales took year-to-date domestic cement sales to 11.9Mt, up nearly a fifth from a year ago.   Gresik’s sales were slower compared to its two main rivals, PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk and PT Holcim Indonesia Tbk , which recorded 41.3 per cent and 36.4 per cent increa...

Anhui Conch to build six new plants in China

Anhui Conch Cement Co, China’s largest cement producer by output, said Tuesday it plans to build six dry-process plants in China, which will cost at least CNY4.95bn (US$709.4m).   The company said in a statement it plans to build the plants in the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Sichuan, Guizhou and the municipality of Chongqing.   Conch also said it plans to sell up to 200 million new Shanghai-listed shares at CNY57.38 each, to raise as much as CNY11.48bn.
