The Irani company Azarab has reportedly won tender for exploitation of Padkamenne (the Homel region) limestone deposits in Belarus and a cement plant construction. Prime-TASS reports it referring to a source close to the Belarusian government. According to data from the Turkish Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TÇMB), cement facilities in the Marmara region sold a total of 13.3Mt domestically in 2007. A recently released report by the Lebanese AUDI Bank, shows that the amount of the total cement deliveries in Lebanon had increased to 511,981t in the first two months of 2008, up from 466,346 tons in the corresponding period of last year, a 9.8% rise.

Demand for cement in the western half of the Eastern Cape stood at 143,862t in the year to April as against 114,526t in the same period last year. Against that, sales in the eastern part of the province dropped to 160,105t in the 12 months to April, compared to 176,136t over the same period last year. Cement consumption in Spain dropped by 10.7 per cent year-on-year to 16.74 million tonnes in the first four months of 2008, the Spanish cement makers association Oficemen said on May 19. The fall was due to the slowdown in the construction sector and the economic conjuncture, Oficemen said. Exports of cement grew by 11.86 pct to 401,327 tonnes in the first four months of the year, while imports declined by 32.66 pct to 3.42 million tonnes. Leading Chinese cement producer Anhui Conch Cement Co Ltd plans to speed up capacity expansion in the aftermath of the most devastating earthquake to hit the country in decades. Tanzania Portland Cement Company Ltd (TPCC) is to invest US$100m in an expansion of its Dar es Salaam plant that will increase its capacity by 90 per cent.
