Indonesia H1 cement consumption up 7.5 per cent YoY on low base

Taiwan Cement Corp  said its Hong Kong-listed unit TCC International Holdings Ltd plans to invest CNY500m in Foshan City in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. The unit yesterday signed an agreement with the Gaoming district government in the city for construction of a cement mill and distribution center there, it said.

Labour conflict forces Eurocement Group to halt production at Mikhailovcement

Eurocement Group holding has halted work at one of its plans in the Ryazan Region, Aton Capital said. According to Kommersant, the company was forced to take the measure owing to conflict with workers demanding pay rises. Mikhailovcement is responsible for roughly 5% of group production, and its capacity is more than 3000tpd of cement. Production at the factory apparently stopped in mid-June. Shri Ramrupai Balaji to set up cement plant

Shri Ramrupai Balaji Steels announced on Tuesday that the board decided to set up a cement plant with a capacity of 3Mt in the state of Orissa involving an estimated investment of about Rs 11bn. The Calcutta high court approved the scheme of amalgamation of the company with Jai Balaji Sponge on Jun. 14, 2007. The company has commissioned the captive power plant of capacity 40 MW, on Mar. 29, 2007 at Durgapur, to reduce power costs.

Egyptian Suez Cement Co Subsidiary Buys Decom

Egyptian Suez Cement Co (SCC) subsidiary, Readymix Beaton Misr (RBM), has fully acquired local sector company Decom, SCC said in a statement to Cairo and Alexandria Stock Exchanges (CASE) from July 10, 2007.     Decom owns five mixing stations for producing ready ferroconcrete with a capacity of 500,000m2.  

South Africa cement sales ease to 3.1%

South African cement sales growth eased to a 3.1% YoY increase in June to 1.229Mt after rising by 10.6% YoY in May to a record 1.337Mt, data supplied by the Cement and Concrete Institute showed. This brought the increase in the first half of 2007 to 12.7% YoY after last year’s 11.0% rise to a record 13.252Mt. The 12-month total to the end of June 2007 stands at 14.032 million tons. Steppe Cement Ltd said chief executive, and two significant shareholders have reduced their combined stake in the company to about 33 per cent by selling their shares. The company said chief executive Javier del Ser Perez has cut his stake to 6.2 per cen, after selling 3.9m shares at UK£3.35 each and now holds 7.11m shares in the company.
